Moldova – the land of wonder

Cricova Cellars (Beciurile Cricova)

The grand Cricova Cellars, a national cultural and historical heritage site, represent the biggest wine “city” in the world. Some 20 kilometres outside Chisinau in a disused limestone mine lies the country’s greatest treasure – Cricova – the wine cellar of the former Soviet empire. It is a 60 square kilometres underground city with 39 kilometres of wine caves, street after street, row upon row, stacked high and stretching far away into the distance.

Milestii Mici Winery (Vinaria Milestii Mici)

Vinaria “Milestii Mici”- is the national- cultural heritage of the Republic of Moldova and was founded in 1969. It is situated near the Milestii Mici village, half-hour ride from Chisinau. Very long time ago here, settled the people who built dwellings from the limestone mined in underground galleries. The climate of the zone is moderately continental. Winters are short and soft, summers – warm and long. The hills and the slopes of Milestii Mici village are washed by the Isnovet River. The warm days and the sufficient humidity are the positive factors that facilitate the cultivation of the European types of grapes and the outstanding ripening of grapes. The history of founding Vinaria “Milestii Mici” is harmoniously connected with few fundamental components: on the one hand outstanding winemaking materials for the production of high quality wines, excellent oak barrels for their endurance and ideal conditions for giving the wines noble and precious qualities and on the other hand wine making traditions and the art of the employees.

Vinaria Purcari

In 1821 Moldova joined the Russian Empire. A decree of the land’s authorities, issued in 1827, created here the first specialized winemaking company, which was named after one of its founders, a Russian-born German, Harmizone. From that point on wine makers of different origins worked hand in hand on the lands of Purcari—Moldovans along with Germans and French. In the 19th century modern, European grape varieties were imported to Purcari. The local soils and climate turned out to be quite welcoming to the French varieties Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Pinot Noir.

The Legend
